These past several months have been a major adjustment for most trying to shift while working remotely. Keep reading for tips on how to stay motivated while working from home!

Working from home can be quite a struggle, from being easily distracted to continuously being unmotivated. I have gathered some tips I have discovered throughout this time, that helps me stay motivated & focused.

Get Dressed

This is a very simple one, that makes a huge difference. Staying in your pajamas may seem more comfortable, but it does not put us in the right mindset. Putting on some work attire or day clothes can alter our perception and increase our performance in tasks! I am not saying put on a suit and high heels (but if you want to, go for it!) I suggest just changing into something that makes you feel confident and professional.

Set a working space in your home

Putting aside a separate space to work is key to minimizing distractions. Back in March, I was doing work from my bed and it was not going well. It may work for some, but for individuals like me who are not so easily motivated, a desk is essential. Make sure you have all the necessities at your desk such as chargers, drinks, pens, and notepads to prevent unnecessary divided attention while working. After getting a desk, the next must-have is a super comfortable chair! No one wants to sit in an un-comfy chair for hours at a time.


Set the Mood and Prevent Distractions

Yes, that’s right! Not only should your workspace be set up but the atmosphere in your workspace should be the right mood. Having good lighting really makes a difference in how alert you feel. Natural lighting is the best lighting! I love opening up my window and having a natural daylight streak in. Designing your workspace to fit your needs is critical. Throwing up a motivation quote, soothing colors, or a mood board is an excellent way. Another tip is SMELL. Lighting a candle with a relaxing scent or using an essential oil diffuser (I personally like lavender, spearmint, eucalyptus, or peppermint oil for calming and alertness). Keep in mind you don’t want to put too much on your desk and to to keep the desk clutter-free. You should also keep your computer clutter-free. Regularly delete browsing history and data to keep your internet fast and get rid of extra files on your computer desktop. This is another way to limit disturbances. Finally, if you live in a noisy household, wearing headphones can help keep your mind from wandering off. I like to put on music or white noise to help block out noises.


Set a To-Do List

Making a to-do list at the beginning of the day and then following it helps aid you in staying on track. I like to use a digital planner. It feels great to check something off after completing it.


Take Breaks

Taking breaks is so important to prevent a lack of energy and fruitless time. When you take a break, make use of your time and power-up! Have a virtual meeting with coworkers during a lunch break or for a quick check-in to see their work progress of the day. Stretch, take your dog out, get a cup of coffee, and then get back to work. I am the queen of setting timers and find setting a timer for how long to work and then how long my break is keeping me staying on my task.
